Reds trade Griffey to White Sox

Huh?  As one comment posted, “Hey 1995 called, they said “Great Trade”!”

Webkit is smokin’

by Chip in Apple, Internet, browsers, computing

try it, you'll like it!

It has been awhile since I’ve tried Webkit, but the latest version is just freaking me out, it renders pages so quickly. This is on a Mac. On Windows, I’ve not run the latest version. The last time I did try it on Windows, it was clunkier, but still pretty impressive.

I am so used to Firefox that I find it hard to stick with Webkit/Safari, but it is a different and much improved web experience compared to the experience both FF and IE provide. I don’t understand how it is so much “faster”, but I’m loving it. It may be the new JavaScript interpreter, SquirrelFish ? Try WebKit and let me know what you think, esp. if you have a Mac.

Yes, I’ve fooled around with IE8. More of the same suckiness.

ditto (re: Windows 7)

I really think Vista represents a turning point (downward) for Microsoft, and welcome a change in the computing landscape.

That said, my experience with Vista is minimal and I realize I need to spend more time with it. As an administrator, I do think Group Policy is the best thing since 2000 arrived…but it is so darn complex.

ZATARAIN’S® Jambalaya Mix + Aidell’s Cajun = foodlove

by Chip in food

yum yumLoving this lately.

Easy to make, and extra good (if more expensive) with this. I also like it with Turkey sausage. Need to find and try the brown rice version, too.

About time…

by Chip in Reds, baseball

He should have been here all season. Corey Patterson’s performance was a predictable as sunshine in July. Strike one on Dusty.

Strike two, I’m afraid, is his handling of Cueto and Volquez. Cueto threw 118 pitches in five innings the other night. Volquez seems to throw 100+ in 5 or 6 each start. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, coming here with the poor reputation for harming Wood and Prior, but he is scaring me a little.

But I think things are looking better for this season. I’m not giving up on finishing above .500 this season. Sad that’s the big goal, though.

Pharos to support Mac/Intel

by Chip in Pharos, computing, libraries

One obstacle (besides pricing) to placing Macs on our floors for public computers has been the lack of Pharos SignUp support for Mac on Intel. Mac on PowerPC has been supported for some time, but not Mac/Intel. I learned today that later in June we should get Mac/Intel support.

In general, I’ve found Pharos SignUp fully-featured, quite easy to administer, and well-priced. The few problems we have encountered have been been due to network issues (our fault.) Most public libraries are trending to Envisionware. I haven’t used that, but I have priced it and…yikes. Not for us. Maybe things have changed, though.

Our vendor for Pharos was Digital Access Control Inc. Kevin Summers is one of the better sales and support reps we have, very responsive. I encourage you to contact him if you are interested in this product. Envisionware isn’t the only option available for PLs.

new disc golf course at Rotary Park

by Chip in Huntington, WV, disc golf

My daughter and I, as representatives of Flight Clubbe, played (or, I should say, walked) the new disc golf course at Rotary Park in Huntington, WV while I was at my mom’s this weekend. It is heavily wooded, with lots of elevation changes. I’d be lucky to break 80 there. I wanted to play the old course, which is difficult enough, but Abby insisted on walking the new one. Only lost one disc (an old but beloved Stratus.)

new Drupal site for Lane Libraries staff

by Chip in Drupal, Internet, computing, libraries, wordpress

We unveiled our new Drupal-based staff site last week: http://staff.lanepl.org (or lanelearning.org).

Drupal isn’t as intuitive as WP, but I like it, and I think it is a good platform for us for this purpose. Our host is anhosting.com and I can’t say enough good things about that outfit. Cheap, and excellent service. Usually don’t get both of those together.

“The promise of Google Apps includes a shrinking IT staff”

by Chip in GAFYD, Internet, computing

ArsTechnica article on GAFYD implementations resulting in a loss of IT jobs in universities.

Comments section of the article worth a read, too. More positive GAFYD comments there than I usually see. Some cite corporations as the next target, but that will be more difficult (at least until the GAFYD-using college students graduate and move along in their careers!)
