Impressions of Wattstax (1973 documentary)
So, I watched Wattstax for the first time tonight. It wasn’t what I expected, exactly. There was less emphasis on the concert, and more dialogue from the soul brothers and sistas on the street, some of whom were pretty funny and reminded me of some people I used to know. Lots of “mofo” talk, [...]

WGN runs old episodes (well, BEST OFs) of SOUL TRAIN and this is one of my favorites of late. “I don’t give a HECK, about the ol’ zodiac!”
Have to pickup this soon. Just learned about it recently, looks great.Black Saints
I was thrilled to find some David Murray Black Saint label recordings available on iTunes this week! Especially Home, an octet album from 1982, long out of print and now on iTunes for $4.95. How wonderful it would be to see the entire Black Saint label on iTunes or eMusic soon.
“Crippleware”
Randall Stross of the New York Times has an article in today’s Sunday Business section about Apple, Microsoft and Digital Rights Management software, the stuff that Apple and the music companies use to lock iPod owners into iTunes, Zune owners into (whatever the Zune thing is called.) I love this show on BBC Radio 3, Jazz Record Requests. The announcer, Geoffrey Smith, always seems happy. I usually hate that sort of thing, but he wears it well. More importantly, he plays wide-range of good stuff!
I was looking for a cheap (ie free) way to record that show, and other streams, to add [...]Jay “Hootie” McShann dies at age 90
Jay McShann, the KC bandleader who helped launch the career of Charlie Parker, died Dec. 7.
“Yardbird,” often shortened to “Bird,” was Parker’s celebrated nickname, which he received while working with Mr. McShann. Driving to a job in Lincoln, Neb., Mr. McShann recalled in a 1999 interview, his car struck a chicken.
“Charlie yelled, ‘Back up. You [...]iPud
I recently purchased a 1st generation refurbished iPod Nano for about $100. I think it is my first Apple product since an old Apple II+ in the early 80s. I like it. It is loud, which is good for when I’m mowing. The click-wheel, I think I’m competent with it now. Pretty simple. I love [...]
Tower Records closing. Are CDs dying?
“Tower Records is closing.” My boss announced this to me today. I think I’d seen it but hadn’t paid much attention to the news. I don’t purchase CDs very often anymore, and the ones I do buy (or borrow), I rip to play on my computer or mp3 player. “Should we be looking at alternatives?” [...]
