Black Saints
I was thrilled to find some David Murray Black Saint label recordings available on iTunes this week! Especially Home, an octet album from 1982, long out of print and now on iTunes for $4.95. How wonderful it would be to see the entire Black Saint label on iTunes or eMusic soon.
Whitney Balliett, d.2007
I just learned that Whitney Balliet, the jazz critic best known for his work in The New Yorker, died on Feb. 1 at the age of 80. Next to Gary Giddins, he was my favorite jazz critic. Apparently, he was shoved aside by the new owners of the magazine in 1987 and eventually faded from [...]
Sunny Bagpipes
I was in the car driving somewhere, sometime before my daughter was born. The details are fuzzy.
On the radio, I heard this wild, stirring, live jazz version of the pop hit “Sunny“.free streaming audio recorder
I love this show on BBC Radio 3, Jazz Record Requests. The announcer, Geoffrey Smith, always seems happy. I usually hate that sort of thing, but he wears it well. More importantly, he plays wide-range of good stuff!

“Charlie yelled, ‘Back up. You [...]iPud
I recently purchased a 1st generation refurbished iPod Nano for about $100. I think it is my first Apple product since an old Apple II+ in the early 80s. I like it. It is loud, which is good for when I’m mowing. The click-wheel, I think I’m competent with it now. Pretty simple. I love [...]
Mambo dominica
I am a big fan of saxophonist/composer David Murray. The quality of his massive recording output varies wildly. At his best, though, there is no one I’d rather hear. If I had to name a favorite recording, it would be Murray’s Steps , but I also love Home (both on the defunct Black Saint label.) [...]
Sidran on Record
Ben Sidran’s collection of interviews Talking Jazz is available for the holidays. These are terrific, revealing interviews with interesting jazz folks circa 1985-1990. I listened to many of these as I first learning about jazz, and I still enjoy hearing them on Saturdays on XM Radio. Just last Saturday they replayed a great interview with [...]
